Disinfection: Press once – is that enough?

How much liquid disinfectant comes out of a dispenser – and how much makes sense?

Hand sanitiser stands are around us throughout our everyday life and are often made available with prompts such as "please use only once". The amount of liquid disinfectant thus dispensed is usually 0.7 to 1.5 ml. That may be economical, but is it hygienic?

The answer is, not really. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is slightly less than one teaspoon (= 5 ml) which fits into a cupped hand. This amount also allows the disinfectant liquid to be spread evenly, thoroughly, and all around the fingers and palms for at least 30 seconds – only then is the disinfection demonstrably effective.
