How we calculate the ecological footprint

The calculation of the ecological footprint is carried out as part of a life cycle assessment (LCA). We calculate the LCA of our fresh and recycled fibres based on ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, using the ecological scarcity method published by the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (BAFU) in 2021. The calculation is based on the measurement unit environmental impact points (UBP) per unit of quantity, with the resulting UBP value representing the ecological footprint.

For the calculation, we assess the environmental impacts of the fibres we use from raw material extraction to delivery (cradle-to-gate), considering factors such as land use, water resources, energy resources, and emissions (e.g., climate change, ozone layer depletion). These environmental impacts are each compared to a permissible target value, such as those defined in international environmental quality objectives and regulatory limits.
